Norman Public Schools Kicks Off 2024-2025 School Year at the Center for Arts and Learning

NORMAN, OK (August 8, 2024) — Norman Public Schools (NPS) launched the 2024-2025 school year by welcoming approximately 1,300 educators to convocation. The event was held at the newly-named Benson Auditorium inside the Center for Arts and Learning, formerly known as Journey Church.

Superintendent Dr. Nick Migliorino reinforced the district’s commitment to its mission and the power of positivity. He shared inspiring stories of staff, volunteers, and community members who embody the district's #NPSGoodThings initiative.

"Our mission to prepare and inspire all students to achieve their full potential is reflected in every action we take," said Dr. Migliorino. "From our 91-year-old volunteer Mr. Jack at Kennedy Elementary to our innovative aviation programs, we're surrounded by remarkable individuals who lift up our entire community."

Sherri Coale, Hall of Fame basketball coach, delivered a keynote address, emphasizing the transformative power of positivity in education. Before her career at the University of Oklahoma, Coale taught in public schools, including Norman High.

"The most successful educators I've known all share one critical trait - an unwavering positive attitude," Coale said. "In the face of challenges, it's that positivity that fuels resilience and ignites passion in both teachers and students. When you approach each day with optimism and purpose, you're not just teaching; you're inspiring. You're creating an environment where learning thrives and where students believe in their own potential. That's the real magic of education."

The district's 2024 Teacher of the Year, Kristyn Erickson, also addressed the audience, sharing her experiences and vision for the upcoming year.

"As educators, we have the unique opportunity to shape the future every day," Erickson said. "The support and inspiration I've received from my colleagues and our community have been instrumental in my journey, and I'm excited to pay that forward to our students."

After convocation, the staff was invited to lunch at the Young Family Athletic Center.

The first day of school at NPS is Thursday, Aug. 15.
