Support Groups
Educational support groups are an integral part of a comprehensive school counseling program. Support groups provide students a safe environment to discuss issues affecting their everyday lives.
Support groups are NOT considered therapy
Usually consist of 6-8 students with a facilitator and co-facilitator
Meet during the school day, once a week, for five to six weeks
Are confidential and promote positive choice-making
Foster peer support
Some of the more frequently offered support groups include: self-esteem, friendship, stress management, grief and loss, changing families (divorce) and conflict resolution. Other groups are made available to address the needs of students at particular school sites as appropriate.
